Several versions of poker are played, and the game can be played with any number of players. The ideal number is six to eight players. The game is played with a normal 52 card deck. If a player is dealt a jack of hearts, the player may bluff by betting that he or she has the best hand. If the player chooses to fold, the player may still compete for the pot. The player who chooses to fold may bluff again by betting that he or she has the highest hand, but will no longer compete for the pot.
The pot is the aggregate of all bets placed by all players in a single deal. Each player must place a certain number of chips in the pot. In addition, each player may be required to contribute to the pot before the deal. Once the deal is complete, the player who made the last bet is said to be “in” or “in front”. If a player checks, he or she is said to be “in front” but not to bet. If the player bets, he or she is said to “call” the bet. The player who bets the most is said to “raise.”
